IAEA Refers Iran to UN Security Council Over Nuclear Program

Al-Taj News – The International Atomic Energy Agency’s Board of Governors voted Wednesday to refer Iran to the UN Security Council over its “non-compliance” with its nuclear commitments, in a move aimed at increasing pressure on Tehran, two diplomats said.

The diplomats said the resolution was adopted with 23 votes in favor and eight abstentions, while three countries — Russia, China, and Niger — voted against it.

The UN agency has been unable to inspect major nuclear facilities in Iran since the 12-day war launched by Israel in June 2025, during which Israel, and later the United States, carried out strikes against nuclear sites.

In the latest war, which broke out on February 28, 2026, Iranian nuclear facilities were targeted. The agency has repeatedly requested permission to access the sites.

The resolution, presented by Britain, France, Germany, and the United States, calls for “requesting the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency to refer” Iran to the Security Council and the UN General Assembly.
